The Hawker F.36/34 "Interceptor Monoplane" Hurricane

K5083 One Prototype aircraft.

Designed and built to Air Ministry specification F.36/34, as modified by provisions of F.5/34, and ordered under contract No. 357483/34 from Hawker Aircraft Limited, Kingston. This aircraft was first flown by P. W. S. Bulman on the 6th November, 1935. It was powered by a 1,025 h.p. Rolls-Royce Merlin "C" engine, driving a Watts two-blade fixed pitch wooden propeller, the aircraft was without armament, and weighed 5,416 lbs. There were evaluation handling and performance trials held at A. & A. E. E., R. A. E., and Rolls-Royce Limited, 1936. Eight Colt Browning machine guns were fitted and flown in August of 1936. Service trials held at Martlesham Heath commenced in March of 1936, first flight was by Flight Sergeant. S. Wroath on the 16th March, 1936. K5083 was allocated as a Ground Instruction Airframe, and allotted the R. A. F. maintenance serial 1211M, during May 1939. The aircraft was finally taken on charge by Hawkers and said to have remained airworthy until 1942.

Built by Hawker Aircraft Ltd., of Kingston and Brooklands, to specification 15/36 under contract No. 527112/36. The first 430 aircraft were manufactured with fabric covered wings; the remaining 170 with metal covered wings, some aircraft later re-fitted with metal wings at Maintenance Units within the R.A.F. Aircraft deliveries commenced on the 15th December, 1937, and were completed on 6th October, 1939. L1547 was first flown on 12th October, 1937.

Built by Hawker Aircraft Limited, Kingston and Brooklands, to Contract No. 751458/38. Aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce Merlin III engines driving Rotol or De-Havilland three blade propellers. Aircraft deliveries commenced on the 29th September, 1939 and were completed on the 1st May, 1940. The average rate of production was one-two aircraft per day. Most aircraft fought with R.A.F. squadrons in Battle of France, and Battle of Britain. Numerous aircraft were later converted to Sea Hurricane IA, and to Mk. IIA. Twelve aircraft were shipped to Yugoslavia, these aircraft were replaced on R.A.F. contract, some aircraft were tropicalised and dispatched to the Middle East late in 1940. Airframes Up to N2422 were completed with fabric covered wings and from airframe N2423 with metal covered wings.

First batch of 500 Mk. I Hurricanes Built by Gloster Aircraft Company Limited, Brockworth, Gloucestershire, to Contract No. 962371/38/C.23a. Aircraft were powered by Rolls-Royce Merlin III engines. Aircraft deliveries commenced in November, 1939 and were completed by April 1940, the average rate of production was three aircraft per day. Majority of these aircraft fought with R.A.F. squadrons in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain. Numerous aircraft were converted to Sea Hurricane IA, Hurricane IIA and IIB; some of these being shipped to Russia in 1941. Up to airframe P2681 were completed with 2 blade Watts propeller, from airframe P2682 completed with 3 blade Rotol propellers. The first 100 aircraft were fitted with TR9D wireless, and the remainder were fitted with TR1133 wireless.

The third production batch of 544 aircraft, this included 44 replacement aircraft for operational attrition. Built by Hawker Aircraft Limited, Kingston, Brooklands, and Langley, to Contract 962371/38. Powered by Rolls- Royce Merlin III engines. Aircraft deliveries commenced on the 21st February, 1940, and were completed on the 20th July, 1940. The average rate of production was three-four aircraft per day. The majority of these aircraft served with R.A.F. squadrons during the Battle Of France, and the Battle Of Britain. Many aircraft were subsequently converted to Sea Hurricane Mk. IA/Mk. IIA/Mk. IIB some aircraft were shipped to Russia late in 1941. Many aircraft were also tropicalised and shipped to the Mediterranean and Middle East from late 1940. P3269 was the prototype Hurricane Mark II with a Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine.

First production batch of 40 aircraft by the Canadian Car & Foundry Company (CCF), Montreal, built during 1939-1940. Aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce Merlin II's and III's, with either Watts two blade fixed pitch, or De-Havilland three blade variable pitch propellers. All the aircraft were shipped to Britain between February and August 1940, they served with R.A.F. and R.C.A.F. squadrons during the Battle Of Britain. These aircraft were not officially designated Mk. X but stayed as Canadian Hurricane Mk. I because of the British built engines that they employed.

Aircraft deliveries commenced on the 2nd July, 1940 and were completed on the 5th February, 1941. Average rate of production about two aircraft per day. The first 25 aircraft of this block were completed with fabric covered wings, but were later modified to metal wings at Maintenance Units, the remaining 475 aircraft completed with metal wings by manufacturer.

The first 320 aircraft were completed by the manufacturer with eight gun wings and powered by Packard Merlin 28 engines. Some aircraft re-fitted with Merlin XX engines thus becoming Mk. IIB and Mk. IIC standard aircraft. 11 aircraft were lost at sea en-route to the U.K. including AE971 - AE974.

The aircraft were delivered between the 29th September, 1943 and the 24th May, 1944. The average rate of production was 5-6 aircraft per day.

One prototype aircraft (plus two conversion to Mk. V standard of KX405, and KZ193), built as a joint project by Hawker Aircraft Limited/Rolls-Royce. Proposed as a low-atack Hurricane. Powered by a ground-boosted Rolls-Royce Merlin 32 engine. Proposed production order cancelled.
